Halloween Warning

Halloween is a confusing time of year.  One helpful warning about some small houses that may look like elf houses, but definitely are not! If the elf house you are approaching suddenly stands up on giant chicken legs, be advised this is NOT and elf house.  Most likely you've stumbled across Baba Yaga.  Baba Yaga does NOT grant wishes and is known to eat people.  Avoid her at all costs.

Frigg's Knitting Bowl Part Two!

I posted earlier about this new project of mine, developing yarn bowls for the serious fiber artist.  Last week I posted my prototype and this week, I have it glazed and looking lovely!  You can see in the front the runes celebrating the Goddess Frigg.  In Norse history, she has always played a special role in protecting weavers and spinners.  It is my hope that they symbols will offer some protection to the fiber artist using the bowl and those lucky enough to wear their wares!

Letters to the Elves

The Elves tell me they appreciate all the wonderful letters they get!  In Iceland (where our Elves are visiting from) people tell the Elves their wishes.  If you ask politely, they might help you out!  But never be rude to an Elf - they can be tricky and might sneak a troll booger into your bed.

Here is a nice letter the Elves received recently:

Reading Runes

I have always enjoyed the mystery of Nordic runes.  I use them frequently when building my elf houses - its easy to throw in a welcoming rune here and there.  With my new work in pottery, I'm working with runes too.  In my last post, I mentioned my yarn bowls with the Goddess Frigg's runes.  In the next couple weeks I'll show you a bit more work along these lines.  If you're interested in runes, I'd suggested the book below.  It has been an enjoyable and easy read for me.

Trying new things with a familiar flare

I've shared before my adventures in pottery on the blog before.  This is a prototype, I'm particularly proud of - a yarn bowl for my wife, whose recently taken up knitting.

The runes on the side represent the Goddess Frigg.  Frigg is the goddess of home and family in Scandinavian myth - but she also has a special role protecting weavers.  It is said that Frigg guards Yddrasil.  The Great World Tree is where the three weavers of our fates sit and spin out the fabric of our lives.  Because of this Frigg is considered the goddess of weavers everywhere.

This prototype is getting its bisque fire and glaze this week.  I'll let you know how it all turns out!
